"Did you get some music?" asked Candy.

"No." The Bachelor was looking depressed as he sunk into his arm chair.

Herbert gave him a drink. "Don’t tell me the future’s that bad?"

"It's not that - it's just like I never left."

"The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be only the beginning," said Edna softly.

"That’s very profound," said the Bachelor.

"Someone else said it," answered Edna, "I forget who."

"I’ve got one last question," asked Candy who was still full of life although the others were a little tired by all the evening’s quantum physics, temporal displacement and cocktails. "What if you went back in time and met your mother before you were born. And what if you killed her?"

"Then you would not be born," said Edna.

"But then how could you have gone back in time in the first place?" said Herbert.

"Shall I test it?" asked the Bachelor.

"Listen, I think we’ve all had enough," said Herbert, "and besides it’s clear nothing would happen because you are here now."

"Just the same, I think I’ll do it."

For the first time Herbert, Edna and Candy were scared, as they sat and waited close together.
